VOLUNTEER FOR A "GO 21!" CAMPAIGN EVENT

George Onuorah is a man of quiet strength and power whose decades-long career as a humble public servant has galvanized his political ambitions.

His physical stature projects the upright man that he is. His indomitable passion for service to his community focuses on being a voice for people who have been marginalized by economic and racial inequities. His journey to Now is a longitudinal path – from that of a youth leader in his native Nigeria, to his candidacy for New York City Council. He aspires to represent District 21 in Queens – one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the United States.

Onuorah’s early foundation, rooted in faith and family, instilled in him high moral values of respect and responsibility. Activities in the Church, Boy Scouts and other community organizations were instrumental in arousing Doctor George’s zeal for serving humanity. In high school, he led the Debating Society and was appointed Senior Prefect, overseeing student affairs.

Onuorah was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from CICA University and Seminary for his considerable body of work in the areas of Philanthropy and Political Activism. He is now affectionately referred to by many as “Doctor George.”

Doctor George currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation for Sustainable Community Development Initiative, a charitable organization that provides and mobilizes resources to the marginalized and disadvantaged in various parts of the world. Foundation for Sustainable Community Development Initiative recently raised funds to honor frontline workers at Elmhurst Hospital and Harlem Hospital, two of New York’s hospitals at the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic. The organization also raised funds to provide medical care, cash and personal protective equipment (PPE) to various communities in District 21.

Onuorah also served as Director of Media for When In Need Foundation, a charitable humanitarian organization that provides food, shelter and medical care to thousands of displaced and underprivileged people in remote areas of the world.

Onuorah co-founded Our World Media, a print and digital magazine of editorial and political commentaries, articles, essays and interviews. His first book, The Political Diary of a Rising Son,  in which he writes about politics from an immigrant standpoint, was published in 2010. 

Doctor George has received numerous accolades, awards and citations during his esteemed career. He has been recognized by the New York State Senate and Assembly, and the United States Congress. He was chosen as “Star of Queens” by the Queens Courier Newspapers in New York City. In 2016, he was honored as a distinguished “King of Queens.”

Onuorah’s exemplary career of service is an inspiration to many who aspire to break free of the limitation of current circumstances. Those external conditions do not define a person. The greatness is within and, the vision one holds for one’s self and the world. He has lived true to his inspiration: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” 

George Onuorah continues to work tirelessly to empower and inspire communities around the world and is committed to be a voice of the people he lives among. He is a resident of LeFrak City, Queens. He has two beautiful daughters, Nneka (32) and Nakia (22), and is deeply passionate about gender equality and youth empowerment.
